The Graduate Program in Nursing is a program of excellence with concept 7 from CAPES. Its only area of concentration is Nursing in Health Promotion.
In this sense, it seeks to develop knowledge related to the role of Nursing in Health Promotion in individuals, groups and communities. It investigates institutional and governmental policies, practices, processes and resources. It analyzes the population’s living conditions, knowledge, attitudes, strategies, and care behaviors in the health-disease process. It favors the transformation of policies and practices in health promotion.
The Program has evolved and shown potential that is expressed in various aspects of the academic process, with significant production in national and international journals and the expansion of scientific collaborations in different parts of the world. The Program seeks to develop studies in order to expand and generate knowledge for the technical-scientific, political-social, epistemological and methodological development of nursing work, committed to a transformative social practice aimed at improving the quality of life, in terms of individual and collective care, taking into account the complexity of inequalities and regional needs.
In this way, the PPGENF is in line with the motto of the Federal University of Ceará, “The universal through the regional”, an institution that seeks to focus its commitment on solving local problems, without forgetting the universal and innovative nature of its production.
History Of The Ppgenf
As a result of the coordinated work of professors who have always had the interest and daring to seek new horizons for professional growth and development, innovation and technological development, CONSUNI Resolution No. 5 of September 4, 1992, signed by the then Magnificent Rector Antônio de Albuquerque Sousa Filho, approved the creation of the Master’s Degree in Nursing. The foundation stone was then laid for what was to become one of the most prestigious Graduate Program in Nursing in Brazil. In March 1993, under the coordination of Prof. Dr. Emeritus Maria Grasiela Teixeira Barroso, a group of 11 students began their journey. At the time, the Master’s degree had “Community Health” as its area of concentration, and the following year a second area of concentration was added, “Clinical-Surgical Nursing”.
On June 2, 1995, CONSUNI Resolution No. 6 created the Doctorate in Nursing. Now we didn’t have a course, but a Graduate Program in Nursing. Over these 30 years, the PPGENF has grown, evolved, broadened its horizons and crossed borders.
We needed to qualify our teaching staff, so part of the vacancies were initially earmarked for internal demand. While other professors had the opportunity to be trained by programs outside of Ceará.
During its existence, the PPGENF has received students from all regions of Brazil, nationally and internationally renowned professors, sent professors and students for technical visits, training and events in the country, as well as Sandwich Doctorates and Post-Doctorates abroad. Currently, the program’s area of concentration is Nursing in Health Promotion and it has three lines of research:
1. Nursing and Health Education
2. Nursing in the Care Process in Health Promotion,
3. Nursing Technology in Health Promotion
It has more than 20 research groups registered in the CNPq directory.
The program has 28 PhD professors, 70% of whom are CNPq research productivity fellows, and 2 externals professors
With a strong international network, the program partners with numerous educational institutions worldwide. These include the University of Porto, Boston College, the University of Virginia, the University of British Columbia, the University of Dundee, Florida Atlantic University and the Universidad Católica de Murcia.
The partnership with the Organization of American States (OAS), through the PAEC-OAS program, also offers training places for students from Latin America and has contributed to the training of professionals from Mexico, Chile, Costa Rica, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia and Haiti.
Over its 31 years, the program has contributed to the development of science in the northeast region, nucleating other Graduate Program in Nursing at other universities such as the federal universities of Maranhão, Piauí, and Pernambuco, as well as UNILAB. It has offered inter-institutional Master’s and Doctorate degrees with UFMA (MINTER), URCA (DINTER) and more recently began its first international DINTER experience with the Universidad Surcolombiana.
PPGENF also leads important projects such as PROCAD, PrINT, and an INCT.
For all its contribution to science, in 2016 the program was consolidated as one of the best in Brazil by achieving a score of 6 in the evaluation of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel (CAPES), and in 2022 it will achieve the maximum score on the assessment, our PPGENF achieved concept 7 by CAPES.
Our Mission
To train highly qualified professionals in Nursing, at the Master’s, Doctorate and Postdoctoral levels, with a solid scientific base, promoting excellence in research, teaching and extension, with a focus on the Health Promotion of populations and the reduction of social inequalities.
Master’s Degree Objectives
At the end of the Master’s course, students should be able to:
- verify the sources of knowledge, incorporating methods of searching for the best scientific evidence, to support decision-making in care practice, education, and research in Adult Health Nursing;
- structure the search for knowledge and analyze scientific advances on the object of study;
- verify the state of the art, gaps and trends in knowledge in the area;
- define the research problems;
- describe the scientific method and ethical aspects of the studies;
- critically interpret research designs and results;
- tutoring undergraduate students in scientific initiation (IC) and course completion work (TCC);
- identify learning needs and collaborate in the implementation of teaching programs in the area.
Objectives Of The Doctorate
At the end of the PhD course, the student should be able to:
- identify Health and Nursing problems and define research priorities in the country;
- plan research designs that are consistent with the proposed objectives;
- verify the impact of research on related areas and on society;
- manage research projects concerning the phenomenon under study;
- verify the relationship between science, universities, and society;
- articulate the research developed in the field of nursing with that carried out in other areas;
- demonstrate the acquisition of multiple perspectives of knowledge, integrating what exists in the area of Adult Health Nursing with different areas of knowledge;
- mentoring undergraduate students in their CI and Capstone projects, guiding the research of students in specialization courses and accompanying their supervisor in master’s degree supervision;
- demonstrate the ability to work collaboratively with other research groups,
- Seek funding for scientific research and carry out national and international integration activities.
The PhD students must also meet all the objectives of the Master’s degree.
